The most common type of wildfire in Mexico are surface fires. In 2023, three quarters of the total forest fires in the Latin American country were surface fires, whereas an additional 22 percent were ladder fires – which burn mostly shrubs. Crown fires – that burn forest canopy – accounted for only three percent of Mexico's wildifres in 2023. That year, there were a total of 7,611 wildfires in Mexico.

Surface fires burn mostly herbaceous vegetation and leaf litter that are at the surface of the ground. Crown fires burn forest canopy. Ladder fires burn mainly shrubs and can carry fire from low-growing vegetation to taller vegetation.
