On average, 5.9 hot days and 4.6 days with heavy rainfall were recorded in Germany from 2011 to 2020. Both figures were a significant increase compared to the first decade of the 20th century. Forecasts for the coming centuries predict another significant increase in hot days, in the context of global climate change.

Heavy precipitation occurs when large amounts of precipitation take place within a certain time frame, in this case in one day, and of at least 10 mm per day. A hot day (formerly "tropicsl day") takes place when the air temperature amounts to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius and more.
