Number of subway lines in Egypt 2010-2020
As of 2020, the Egyptian Metro running inside greater Cairo had three lines. This increased from two in 2012, when the third line was opened, running from the Kitkat station to Adly Mansour station. This line is still under construction, with two more branches planned, one to Rod El Farag and the other to Cairo University. The Third line is intended to connect the Monorail in the 6th of October City (at the Nile Valley station) to the New Administrative Capital's Monorail (at El-Estad Station or Cairo Stadium station). Furthermore, some 338 units are carrying people across these lines in 2020.
Previously, the Heliopolis Metro, the oldest in Africa, and the Tram were taken out of operation in 2014 to be replaced with the planned new transportation system in construction.
