Number of public transport lines in Egypt 2019/2020, by region
As of 2019/2020, the number of public transport routes in Egypt amounted to 1,613, covering close to 250,000 kilometers. Of those, the majority were outside cities with 561 lines. Cairo and inside cities (without Cairo and Alexandria) followed with 467 and 434, respectively.
Moreover, informal private drivers play a major role in transportation in Egypt and are generally harder to track. Indeed, almost 45 percent of the registered buses in the country were privately owned compared to 8.5 percent for public ones by the end of 2021.
