Visitor number to Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty South Korea 2012-2023
Around 2.36 million visitors went to see the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty in South Korea in 2023. That includes both paid and free entries. This was the third highest figure recorded during the time period from 2012 to 2022. Notably, visitor numbers to the tombs continued to increase even during the COVID-19 pandemic, while for many other Korean sights, visitor numbers declined sharply.
The Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty comprise 40 tombs scattered over 18 different locations on the Korean Peninsula. They are dedicated to members of the royal Yi family, whose dynastic rule over the Joseon Dynasty (1392 to 1897) and the Korean Empire (1897 to 1910) lasted for more than half a millennium. The tombs were finally declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2009.
