Oil and gas operations produced approximately five billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e)worldwide in 2022, accounting for roughly 15 percent of total global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Under the IEA's Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE), Scope 1 and 2 emissions from the production, transport, and processing of oil and gas could result in a 60 percent reduction to 2030.

The IEA's Net‐Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE) involves transformation of the
global energy system that is unparalleled in its speed and scope. Policies are
rapidly introduced to reduce emissions from existing fossil fuel infrastructure and
to scale up the deployment of clean energy technologies. It is consistent with limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 °C with no or limited temperature overshoot.
