According to this 2021 survey, emotional exhaustion, a clear manifestion of burnout, is common among American physicians. That year, 57.9 percent of surveyed doctors had a high emotional exhaustion score and a further 15 percent, an intermediate score. In other words, around 73 percent of physicians are somewhat emotionally exhausted. On the other hand, a fourth of responding physicians in the United States scored low on the emotional exhaustion scale.

Emotional exhaustion levels have been calculated based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The MBI is the most widely used measure in research on burnout and is generally regarded as the measure of choice for any self-reported assessment of this syndrome.
