Alternating current (AC) chargers were the most common type of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Spain, with around 25,000 AC charging points recorded in the country as of the fourth quarter of 2023. The Spanish charging infrastructure benefitted from a steady increase between 2020 and 2023, propelled mostly by an increasing number of AC chargers. The power coming from the grid is always alternating current, which partly explains the prevalence of this charger type, though batteries store power as direct current (DC). In electric vehicles, the onboard charger converts AC to DC power.
