In 2023, Australia was the world's largest coal exporting nation by a significant margin, having exported 64.3 billion U.S. dollars worth of coal. Meanwhile, Indonesia came in second place, and was responsible for coal exports amounting to a value of 34.6 billion U.S. dollars that year.
The total global coal exports had a sales value of 238 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, which declined by nearly 23 percent in 2023, to 189.7 billion U.S. dollars.
