In 2022, Catalonia recorded the largest passenger car fleet across all of Spain's autonomous communities, at nearly seven million vehicles in circulation in the region. Catalonia was also the state where most Zero emission stickers were granted, with around 1.06 million vehicles falling under the emission standards covered by this environmental sticker. Catalonia was the second-leading autonomous community in terms of electric vehicle sales across vehicle segments in 2022, behind Madrid. However, while electric vehicle sales were high in Madrid, under 92,000 passenger cars in its fleet were granted the Zero emission sticker.
Passenger car fleet in each Spanish autonomous community in 2022, by environmental sticker
Figures are Statista's calculations based on data provided by the source.
The Zero emission sticker is granted to the most energy-efficient vehicles including battery-electric vehicles (BEV), extended range electric vehicles (EREV), plug-in electric vehicles (PHEV) with a driving range of 40 kilometers or above, and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV).
The Eco sticker is granted to PHEVs with a range under 40 kilometers, hybrid vehicles (HEV), compressed natural gas vehicles, and liquefied natural gas vehicles. These vehicles must also meet the criterias for the C sticker.
The C sticker is granted to vehicles with an internal combustion engine which meet the latest EURO emission standards. These include: petrol passenger cars and petrol light commercial vehicles registered since January 2006 and diesel cars and LCVs registered since September 2015, as well as vehicles with over eight seats and heavy vehicles registered since 2014, both petrol and diesel.
The B sticker is granted to vehicles with an internal combustion engine which do not meet the latest EURO emission standards, but meet previous standards. These include: petrol passenger car and vans registered since January 1st, 2001; diesel cars and vans registered since 2006; vehicles over eight seats and heavy vehicles (both diesel and petrol) registered since 2006.
The rest of the vehicle fleet (the 50 most polluting percent) does not have the right to an environmental sticker, as these vehicles do not meet the requirements to be labelled as a clean vehicle.
