As of November 2022, the state of Tamil Nadu had an extensive local administrative structure consisting of 661 local bodies. The local government comprises of 528 town panchayats and over 100 municipalities. The local bodies, as a third tier of government play a vital role in delivering essential services at the grassroots level.
