The world's nine largest greenhouse gas emitters in 2022 were all oil and gas fields. The biggest polluter of all was the Permian Basin in Texas, which released 216 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) from oil and gas production activities. Other major polluters included steel plants, power stations, and refineries, as well as a road network in Los Angeles. Combined, the 25 most polluting physical assets produced globally an estimated 1.6 GtCO₂e in 2022.
