Texas Permian Basin released an estimated 216 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2022, making it the world's most polluting oil and gas-producing area. The Permian Basin is a large shale basin spanning parts of west Texas and southeastern New Mexico and is the most productive oil basin in the United States. Combined, the ten most polluting oil and gas fields produced more than one GtCO₂e in 2022.
