As of 2023, around 22 states use an easy to understand form and do not require provider certification to change the gender listed on an individuals driver's license. Many of those states allow residents to mark M, F, or X on the ID. Eight states require proof of surgery, court, order, or amended birth certificate. These states include Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.
