Satellites detected more than 1,000 human-caused methane-super emitter events worldwide in 2022. The top 15 emitters were responsible for 956 of these super-emitting events, with the most being detected in Turkmenistan - 184, all of which were from oil and gas fields. The majority of global methane leaks were from oil and gas fields, as well as coalmines and waste sites. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that traps 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period and is a major contributor to climate change.
