Melbourne was the top destination visited by domestic overnight visitors for holiday or leisure purposes in Australia in the year ended December 2023. With over 3.46 million overnight visitors recorded that year, the city of Melbourne snatched Sydney's crown, previously the most popular holiday or leisure destination. New South Wales' North and South Coasts were also very popular holiday destinations, with a combined total of over 5.7 million domestic overnight tourists visiting these coastal regions.
