A study conducted in February and March 2023 asked adults in the United States to guess whether a ChatGPT-generated text about travel was made by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) or a human. When presented with a text generated by the GPT-3.5 version, roughly 53 percent of respondents believed that it was either made or edited by a human. This figure rose to 66.5 percent for a text generated by the GPT-4.0 version.

¹ The study included two surveys: one focusing on GPT-3.5 (including 1,920 respondents surveyed from February 20 to 26, 2023) and one based on texts generated by GPT-4.0 (including 1,394 respondents surveyed from March 22 to 25, 2023).
