Global markets and institutions with a partial or total TikTok ban 2023

As of April 4, 2023, over 16 regions or global institutions had imposed a partial or total ban on social media app TikTok. Most notably, Afghanistan and India were among regions with a total ban on the app that included also regular users. In comparison, Pakistan has banned and reinstated TikTok for users in the country several times, the first of which was in October 2020. Additionally, several regions and institutions have banned the social video app from government-owned devices. In 2023, lawmakers in the United States resumed their efforts over protecting the country from the alleged national security risk presented by TikTok. On February 27, 2023, federal institutions in the United States were prompted with deleting the app within the following 30 days. The move caused governments in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and New Zealand to adopt similar measures.
