Democracy Index of India 2006-2023
After being between seven and eight between 2006 and 2018, the democracy index of India fell to 6.6 in 2020, before increasing to above seven again in 2023. There has been a shrinking space for civil society and independent media in India in recent years. Nevertheless, with an index score of 7.2, it still ranks higher than several other countries around the world. Countries are given a score from 0 to 10 with scores closer to 10 meaning the country is more democratic.
