Battery-electric vehicles were the most popular electric vehicle segment for light passenger vehicles in Portugal, with over 39,200 new registrations of this type in 2023. Fully electric vehicles were also the most popular among light commercial vehicles such as vans, with close to 2,500 battery-electric light goods vehicles sold that year.
Alternative fuels were still unpopular among new heavy commercial vehicles, partly due to the charging challenges long-haul heavy goods vehicles face. In 2024, only 399 battery-electric heavy commercial vehicles were sold in Portugal.
