In 2023, petrol internal combustion engine vehicles were the best-selling propulsion type in Portugal, making up 36.1 percent of the light passenger vehicle market. Alternative fuel vehicles were the second leading propulsion type in Portugal, with battery-electric vehicles making up 18.2 percent of the market and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles holding some 13.6 percent of the total new registrations.
