Both the value of challenger bank funding and the number of deals spiked in 2021, when challenger banks raised 14 billion U.S. dollars with 128 deals. In 2022, however, funding dropped by 69 percent, to 4.3 billion U.S. dollars, and the number of deals decreased sharply as well. In 2023, the downward trend did not reverse. By April 21, challenger bank funding amounted to merely 0.1 billion U.S. dollars, with eight disclosed deals.
