China is the world's largest emitter of nitrous oxide (N₂O), with the equivalent of 423 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emitted in 2022. This accounted for roughly 15 percent of global N₂O emissions that year. India ranked second, followed by the United States and the 27 countries that make up the European Union.
