Global military spending increased since 2000. While the highest sum was spent in the Americas in 2023, the increase is down to increased military spending in Asia, which increased from around 204 billion U.S. dollars in 2000 to around 595 billion dollars in 2023, nearly three times the amount spent in 2000. The United States is the world's largest military spender, whereas Ukraine had the highest military expenditure as a percentage of GDP.
