The Middle East and North Africa region's agricultural water withdrawals as a share of total renewable water resources has exceeded 7,700 percent in 2020. The largest share of total water withdrawals in most MENA region countries was used for agricultural purposes.
Total agricultural water withdrawals as a share of total renewable water resources in the Middle East and North Africa region from 2000 to 2020
*Agricultural water withdrawal - Annual quantity of self-supplied water withdrawn for irrigation, livestock and aquaculture purposes. It can include water from renewable freshwater resources, as well as water from over-abstraction of renewable groundwater or withdrawal from fossil groundwater, direct use of agricultural drainage water, direct use of (treated) wastewater, and desalinated water. Water for the dairy and meat industries and industrial processing of harvested agricultural products is included under industrial water withdrawal.
Renewable water resources represent the long-term average annual flow of rivers (surface water) and recharge of aquifers (groundwater) generated from precipitation.
MENA region countries included: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia
United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
