Road and rail travel over 30 kilometers in Germany returned to similar patterns in fall 2022, compared to pre-pandemic travel in 2019. While road travel returned to similar levels as in 2019 in the first half 2019, rail travel took longer to recover until the summer of 2022, when they experienced a spike while the 9-Euro-Ticket was available. Meanwhile, domestic air travel has been increasing again, following the drop by around 90 percent at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but was still around a third below pre-pandemic levels in October 2022.

Data is generated on the basis of mobile phone data, which only allows disaggregation by mode for journeys over 30 kilometers. All shorter journeys are excluded from this analysis.
The data does not allow differentiation between transport of people and goods and may include some double counting for road transport.
Data represents a 7-day average and has been corrected for public holidays.
