In 2023, California boasted a charging infrastructure comprised of nearly 105,700 public and shared private chargers. Level 2 chargers were by far the most popular charger type in the U.S. state, with around 32,700 public and 61,000 share private chargers of that type recorded in 2023. In contrast, Level 1 chargers represented a smaller share of the charging network, especially of the shared private charging infrastructure.

Shared private charging data was compiled by the source using answers from a voluntary survey carried out in 2023.
The source provides the following definitions:
Level 1 chargers are alternating current chargers, using electricity at 120 volts in order to provide five miles or less of range per hour of charging.
Level 2 chargers are alternative current chargers, which use electricity between 208 and 240 volts to charge an electric vehicle, providing between 14 to 35 miles of range per hour of charging.
DC Fast chargers are direct current chargers using electricity at 480 volts to recharge a battery-electric vehicle to 80 percent of battery capacity in around 30 minutes. The charging time depends on the size of the vehicle battery and the charger's power level.
