In 2022, California boasted a charging infrastructure comprised of nearly 88,300 public and shared private chargers. Level 2 chargers were by far the most popular charger type in the U.S. state, with around 28,600 public and 49,900 share private chargers of that type recorded in 2022. In contrast, DC Fast chargers still represented a smaller share of the charging network, especially of the shared private charging infrastructure, partly due to their cost.

Shared private charging data was compiled by the source using answers from a voluntary survey carried out in 2022. The following providers have submitted a reply to this survey: Blink/SemaConnect, ChargePoint, Enel X, EV Connect, EVCS, EVgo, Flo, FreeWire, Greenlots/Shell, KITU Systems, Department of General Services, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, City of Anaheim, City of Vernon, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, PowerFlex, Redding Public Utility, Rivian, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Silicon Valley Power, and Tesla.
The following providers did not answer the voluntary survey on shared private charging: Andromeda Power, ChargeBliss, EV Box, EVGateway, EVRUS, Liberty Plugins, Noodoe, Nuuve, OpConnect, SWTCH, Tellus Power, Volta, and Webasto.
Data excludes shared private electric chargers which were reported but not associated with a specific county, listed as "unknown" by the source.
The source provides the following definitions:
Level 1 chargers are alternating current chargers, using electricity at 120 volts in order to provide five miles or less of range per hour of charging.
Level 2 chargers are alternative current chargers, which use electricity between 208 and 240 volts to charge an electric vehicle, providing between 14 to 35 miles of range per hour of charging.
DC Fast chargers are direct current chargers using electricity at 480 volts to recharge a battery-electric vehicle to 80 percent of battery capacity in around 30 minutes. The charging time depends on the size of the vehicle battery and the charger's power level.
