Global share of natural gas reserves in 2023, by extraction method

As of 2023, natural gas reserves worldwide amounted to a total of approximately 206 trillion cubic meters. Conventional natural gas reserves accounted for the majority of that volume, at 94 percent. The remaining six percent was attributable to unconventional natural gas reserves, of which 86 percent was shale gas.
