A recent forecast estimated that after the phase-out of nuclear energy in Germany in April 2023, the volume of spent nuclear fuel present in the country would amount to approximately 27,000 cubic meters. The mass of the spent nuclear fuel would be around 17,000 tons of heavy metal. According to the forecast, over 60 percent of it would be produced in nuclear power plants and stored directly without reprocessing.
