A recent forecast estimated that after the phase-out of nuclear energy in Germany in April 2023, the spent nuclear fuel to be stored directly would amount to roughly 10,010 tons of heavy metal, almost entirely produced in nuclear power plants. Around 6,300 tons of spent nuclear fuel from nuclear power facilities and research, development, and demonstration reactors would be reprocessed and stored afterward. Reprocessing spent nuclear fuel is a process used to separate nuclear waste from other materials that can be recovered and reused.
Forecast mass of spent nuclear fuel after nuclear power phase-out in Germany in February 2023, by origin and disposal
(in tons of heavy metal)
Spent nuclear fuel to be stored directly is first stored in the proximity of the nuclear facility and then it is disposed of, without being reprocessed.
Spent nuclear fuel is highly radioactive.
