The United Kingdom government has outlined plans to decarbonize the transportation sector, which is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. Plans include ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, and from 2035 all new cars and vans must be 100 percent zero emission at the tailpipe. This could save help 620 to 850 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent between 2020 and 2050. There are also plans to end the sale of all non-zero emissions heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), which could deliver from 200 to 220 MtCO₂e savings between 2020 and 2050.
