The rule of law is one of the key values which binds the member states of the European Union together. Member states are required to adhere to principles of the rule of law such as respect for fundamental rights, adherence to legal and judicial procedure, and the safeguarding of independent institutions. Citizens of EU member states report widely differing understandings of the rule of law in their home countries, with citizens of Bulgaria, Lithuania, and France reporting low levels of being informed about this area, while citizens of the Netherlands, Finland, and Denmark report being highly informed.
