The consumer price index for long-distance train travel in Germany was on an overall downward trend between January 2020 and early 2023. Meanwhile, the trend for short distance rail journeys and single, day, and monthly tickets have been on a slight upwards trend in the same period, with the notable exception of June, July, and August 2022. During this period the German government introduced a monthly ticket for nine euros, valid on local and regional public transport. This substantially affected the consumer price index for transport association monthly tickets for adults and short-distance train journeys.
