By far, the highest number of immigrants resided in Europe and North America in 2020. There were approximately 145 million migrants living this region that year. North Africa and the Middle East hosted the second highest number of migrants at around 50 million. There are varying reasons for people to emigrate from their country of origin, from poverty and unemployment to war and persecution.
