A global survey involving companies with revenue higher than one billion U.S. dollars investigated the level of AI maturity in the travel industry. The firms were classified based on the implementation level of a series of AI-related capabilities, ranging from cloud and platform tools to AI strategies. As of September 2021, two-thirds of the surveyed travel companies were labeled as "AI Experimenters", meaning that they lacked mature AI strategies and the capabilities to operationalize. Meanwhile, "AI Achievers" - businesses that had differentiated AI strategies and the ability to operationalize for value - accounted for 13 percent of the sample.
