There were over 112,900 photovoltaic energy-related installations by the new and renewable energy supply project in South Korea between 2021 and 2023, most of which were for residential buildings and renewable energy supply and installation businesses. Across energy types, there were approximately 123,900 new and renewable energy-related installations throughout the country during that time.

Weather-dependent energy sources

The South Korean government has been investing heavily in renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, to ween off its dependence on fossil fuel imports. As summers get warmer from the impact of climate change, solar energy has become a more attractive source of renewable energy. Already, solar energy makes up more than half of all power generated from new and renewable sources, and the government seeks to make solar power make up at least a third of the general energy supply by 2030.

Growing environmental awareness

In the private sector, incorporating renewable energy has also become popular. Most households are now more willing to have renewable energy installations in residential buildings, despite not being aesthetically pleasing. This may partly reflect the growing public conscientiousness toward environmental activism in South Korea in response to the climate crisis.
