In 2022, approximately 168 international conferences with up to a hundred participants took place in Japan. In contrast, the number of international conferences that attracted more than 10,000 participants amounted to one. During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, inbound travel to Japan was severely restricted, which is also reflected in the number of international conferences hosted after 2020.

For an event to be considered an international conference, following four conditions have to be met:
1. Hosting organization has to be either an international organization or group, or a national organization or group.
2. Event has to have 50 or more participants.
3. Event has to have three or more regions or nationalities represented, including Japan.
4. Period of the event has to be of one day or more.
