On average, 68 percent on European Union citizens believe that corruption is at least fairly widespread in their home countries, with over a fifth saying that this corruption is very widespread. While this is a worrying development for the EU, the share of citizens saying corruption is widespread is lower in the countries of Western and Northern Europe, with Finland and Denmark showing low levels of corruption, according to their citizens.
On the other hand, countries of Southern and Eastern Europe perform relatively poorly, with Greece, Cyprus, and Croatia being the countries with the most citizens flagging their concerns with corruption. Astonishingly, 98 percent of Greeks responded that corruption is either very or fairly widespread in their country.
