Corruption within the European Union is one of the key issues which impedes European integration and has resulted in the eroding of trust in some EU member states, notably in Central & Eastern Europe. In 2022, Latvia, Czechia, and Hungary were the three member states with the greatest share of their citizens reporting that corruption was either accepted or tolerated in their home countries.
In these countries, citizens reported if they were looking to get something from the public authorities it would be accepted for them to offer money, a gift, or a favor in order to ease the process. On the other hand, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Portugal show the fewest number of citizens reporting that corruption is tolerated or accepted.
