Mexico's railway sector emissions surpassed two million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) worth of greenhouse gases in 2021. This represented an increase of nearly five percent in comparison to the previous year, but still fell short when compared to the peak recorded in 2015, at around 2.5 MtCO₂e. Despite registering significantly higher values, emissions from the Mexican road transportation sector followed a similar trend over the same period of time.
