In 2022, the brand value of Lojas Americanas in Brazil plummeted by over 50 percent to little more than 840 million Brazilian reals. The store-based and online retail chain is part of the Rio de Janeiro-based holding Americanas S.A. In early 2023, the company announced accounting inconsistencies worth 20 billion reals on its balance sheets. As a result, CEO Sergio Rial resigned, and Americanas filed for bankruptcy on January 19 of that year. Meanwhile, Brazil's top 10 most valuable brands in 2022 included one of the holding's main competitors, Magazine Luiza (also known as Magalu).
