Poland is the European Union's biggest importer of commodities or goods not classified under the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC). The central European country's trade deficit expanded massively in 2023, rising to over 3.2 billion euros.
Germany and France are the biggest exporters of goods in this category as of 2023. Due to the varied nature of products included under transactions not classified elsewhere in SITC, trends are not particularly visible in this category, with many countries oscillating between surplus and deficit each year.
Annual trade balance for commodities and transactions not classified elsewhere in SITC* within the European Union in 2023, by member state
(in millions of Euros)
*SITC stands for Standard International Trade Classification.
The trade balance between EU member states should in theory always be zero, as every export has a corresponding import within the union. In practice, however, due to irregularities and inconsistencies in how trade is valued or recorded, there are often discrepancies in these figures. Due to the heterogenous nature of this product category, encompassing all unclassified transactions, large discrepancies can be seen in many years.
