The Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands and Belgium are the European Union's largest exporters of chemicals and related products, with Germany also having previously being a substantial exporter. However, this has turned into a small trade deficit for the country in recent years. Ireland, one of the smallest member states in the union with around 5 million inhabitants, has become a leader in pharmaceuticals in recent years, with large U.S. multinational companies such as Pfizer having subsidiaries in the country.
