With the sudden embargo of Russian energy imports by the states of the European Union in reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many countries moved towards importing energy from the Netherlands. The country is the EU's largest energy exporter due to being one of the home countries of Shell (formerly Royal Dutch Shell until 2022). The countries which import the most energy from other member states were the EU's two largest economies, Germany and France.
