Germany and the Netherlands are the EU's two major exporting powers, with an increasingly large gap opening up between them and other EU countries since the Global Financial Crisis. The increase in the Netherlands' exports since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic is especially striking, as this smaller EU member state converges with Germany, by far the largest member state and economy in the union.
France's exports have stagnated over the period since 1999, leading it to fall from Europe's second biggest exporter to fifth biggest, behind the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy. Since 2020, Belgium has increased its monthly exports rapidly, increasing in some months by as much as 15 billion Euros compared with the same months in previous years.
