In 2021, the energy consumption of the paper industry in France amounted to 25.5 terawatt-hours in total. Approximately half of the energy consumption was heat energy produced from biomass burning. Natural gas accounted for another eight terawatt-hours of the heat consumed. By comparison, the total electric energy consumed by the paper industry in France that year was only seven terawatt-hours. However, electricity could replace natural gas if this industrial sector becomes more electrified in the next years.
