In 2021, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) accounted for almost 97 percent of the total value of issued green bonds in China. In China, these companies are an important tool for the government to carry out industrial policies, which is why SOEs are often utilized to facilitate the development of specific sectors or steer the economy in a certain direction. Because green bonds are an emerging investment tool, it makes that the government pushes them to reduce the country's carbon footprint and transition to a more sustainable economy.
