In 2021, the share of postdoctoral research in Israeli universities in biological sciences accounted for almost a third of all research (32.7 percent). The physical sciences followed this field, with almost 20 percent. General arts and applied arts constituted Israel's least researched academic field, with only 0.5 percent of the research on this subject.

The academic fields of research were compiled into 14 general fields.
- The data concerning medical studies does not include bio-medical studies. These were classified under Biological studies.
- In this statistic, biological studies include microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology and biomedical science.
- Engineering and architecture also compiles biomedical and biotechnological engineering, as well as bio-engineering, food engineering and biotechnology.
