Digitalization in the EU: share of households with internet access in EU 2022

Internet connectivity is a key element in facilitating the transformation of the European economy and society, with the EU encouraging member states to invest in their digital infrastructure and broadband networks. As of 2022, most EU member states show a high level of internet access at the household level, with over 90 percent of households having access in the majority of member states.

In Western and Northern European countries, such as the Netherlands, Finland, and Spain, this can be as high as 98 percent, while the EU average is closer to 93 percent. There are a few notable laggards in terms of household internet access, notably Southern and Eastern European member states, such as Greece, Bulgaria, and Portugal, who all report connectivity levels of less than 90 percent.
