In 2021, the employee basic medical insurance fund in China received an income of more than 1.9 trillion yuan, while spending almost 1.5 trillion yuan. Less than 26 percent of all medical insurance participants were beneficiaries of the employee basic medical insurance program. However, the employee medical insurance fund maintained significantly higher income and spending than the resident basic medical insurance fund.
